🏰 Fort Matanzas National Monument – Palm Coast, FL
Fort Matanzas National Monument is a historic coastal fort located along the Matanzas River, offering visitors a glimpse into Florida’s colonial past. Built in 1740 by the Spanish to defend St. Augustine from naval attacks, the fort sits on a small barrier island and is accessible by a scenic ferry ride through salt marshes and coastal waterways.
You can explore the fort’s cannon rooms, walk its wooden deck, and enjoy panoramic views of the river and surrounding marshlands. The site also features educational exhibits and ranger-led programs that highlight the history of the fort, early Spanish settlement, and the strategic role of the Matanzas Inlet. Whether you’re a history buff, a photographer, or just looking for a unique outdoor adventure, Fort Matanzas offers a memorable experience blending history, nature, and coastal scene.
It is also near the Matanzas Inlet if you want to enjoy walking the beach and watching where the ocean meets the Matanzas River. There are 2 parking lots, one on each side of the road. One side is the river side, and the other goes to the ocean. You can at most times walk under the bridge to go venture the Matanzas River side. You can go swimming on both sides as many bring boats, jet skis, paddle boards and innertube.
